Why 40 amps is the right ceiling for most homes
Chargers are sold on peak amperage, which invites people to buy more than their house can deliver. A 48-amp or 80-amp unit needs a dedicated 60-amp or 100-amp circuit, and on the 100-amp and 125-amp panels common in Bay Area homes built before 1990, that often forces a full service upgrade costing $3,000 to $8,000 on its own.
The AX-Home 40 draws 40 amps on a 50-amp breaker. It fits inside the spare capacity most homes already have, and it still adds roughly 30 miles of range per hour. If your car sits in the driveway for eight hours overnight, that is 240 miles of range — far more than a 40-mile daily commute consumes. Paying for more power buys you nothing while the car is parked and asleep.
We will tell you plainly if your situation is the exception. Households running two EVs on a single circuit, or drivers doing 150+ miles a day, sometimes do benefit from a 48-amp unit. That is a survey question, not a catalog question.

Off-peak scheduling matters more than you would think. PG&E's EV rate plans price overnight electricity far below afternoon peak. Setting the charger to start after 9pm through the app is typically worth several hundred dollars a year against charging the moment you get home — the single highest-return setting on the unit.
